Ingredients:
1 53-ounce can Van Camps pork and beans
1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
1 cup brown sugar (adjust amount to desired sweetness)
1 green pepper, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 pinch red pepper (optional)
Bacon (optional)
Ingredients substitutions:
Suggested brand is Van Camps, but you can substitute with any brand of pork and beans.
Steps:
1. Preheat oven to 375 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Combine all ingredients, except bacon, in a 9" x 13" pan.
3. Top beans with strips of bacon, if desired.
4. Bake in oven for 1 hour.
What makes this recipe special?
My mother made the best baked beans but never used a recipe. I remember standing next to her and scooping out all of the ingredients to measure them to come up with a recipe. Unlike my mother, I do not have the gift of measuring by sight.
